Consciousness-Raising groups in the ‘60’s were a way for women to learn from each other’s life experiences by gathering together and sharing stories of oppression under the patriarchal systems that dominated their lives.

The main idea was encapsulated in the saying: The personal is political. Women understood the problems they were facing personally were actually being caused by systemic sexism; and, therefore, it was not enough to tell their stories. They must use their experiences as a basis for making societal and legal change.

We are reviving the spirit of these innovative gatherings with this series to address what is arguably the most harmful form of systemic sexism: the court-enabled theft of children from mothers in the agenda to continue men’s power and control after divorce.

Whereas the '60’s consciousness-raising groups were the cultural foundation for the women’s civil rights movement, our virtual gatherings serve as a basis for the empowerment of women in their role as mothers post-separation, something that has been mostly ignored by the women’s movement thus far.

We listen here with minds and hearts to a few of the countless victims of systemic discrimination in family courts, women who have fought valiantly for custody and/or protection of their children.

MAMA 40

My daughter went to her father’s for a two week visit of make up time. It’s been two years, and she hasn’t been back.

The guardian ad litem [GAL] tells the judge that she is doing better with her father.

I haven’t seen her for two years and yet I was the one taking her to all her doctors appointments. Her father wouldn’t even comply with the time sharing.

I have spent over a half million dollars trying to bring her back.

I miss her terribly.

MAMA 41

I have been fighting my rapist and abuser for 5 years while he and his 20 year-old girlfriend destroy a once loving relationship I had with my 4 children (10, 8, 6, 4) and take every dime they can squeeze out of me on top of it.

My daughter won’t even talk to me now, and that only happened after she revealed the abuse they were suffering and were taken (and still not given back to me). When the assault charges were dropped against my ex and his girlfriend, they were forced to go back to the home that was hurting them.

My son who is 8 is starting to talk like that too, and they pretend that they’re just doing what the children want by obstructing visits.

It hurts so much and I can’t afford a lawyer. I want to change the laws to protect mothers just like me. It’s nice to not be alone, but it’s heartbreaking to know there’s so many of us suffering this injustice.

Thank you for bringing attention to this!

I was forced to sign over custody of my daughter without due process based on false allegations of medical neglect. My daughter’s medical needs were extensive & she suffered life threatening conditions as a result of that removal. Not to mention the trauma from being forced to be away from me & into the home of a pedophile.

That was 16 years ago. She is 18 now & we are trying so hard to help her process & deal with the long term effects.

I am currently facing a “high-conflict” custody battle with the father of my 4 year old who is weaponizing the courts & our daughter against me. I am terrified of the process & potential outcome.

It gives me great hope to know that there are people who understand & are working to change the system. Thank you!!

I was a child failed by our court system 25 years ago and now the same county court system is failing my baby boy. He’s now six and our abuser is about to get full custody because of a corrupt lawyer and GAL.

It’s SICK!

Our son has only been in his father’s life for 2 out of 6 years because of his neglect . Now our son is saying he is abusing and molesting him. We have proof and the court system and child services still sided with him and his false accusations!

He’s just a baby and I don’t know what else to do because they want to put ME in jail for trying to protect my baby!!!!

I left an abusive marriage and my mental health was used to take my (now) 10 year old daughter. I have tried to fight the system. The system wants money and for me to remain silent. I cannot and will not be silent.

I’m a pediatrician and a mother to 5 year old boy whom I lost completely due to family court abuse for speaking up about my safeguarding concerns and the domestic abuse/coercive control we have been suffering.

My child was unjustly and forcefully removed from me without any evidence of harm. The Judge and his social worker monkeys fabricated alienation concerns out of thin air.

I am in so much pain and I will give my all to see change and spread awareness and protect children and women from these generational crimes.

I have be through the devastating family court system. Threatened with removing my child from me. Bogus alienation labels.

Because I dared to speak up about his violent and physically abusive behaviour. I went through 4 years of hell.

I discovered that social services and cafcass and psychologists are just a bunch of thugs who further enabled his abuse and out and out lied to the obnoxious misogynistic judges.

Eight messages from victims of the Custody Crisis will be shared in each virtual gathering of minds and hearts. We listen to women who have fought valiantly for custody or protection of their children in Family Court and lost.

Identifying information is redacted so as to protect the women’s privacy. If you want to comment on a mom’s message, you may refer to her by number.

This fifth session includes a recent message from a woman whose infant was taken from her [Mama 33]. The father filed an emergency motion falsely alleging she was a “danger to herself and her baby”. The judge gave him sole custody and placed the mother on supervised visitation—after two weeks of zero contact.

This shows clearly that judges do not care at all about the well-being of children, even infants, and that entitling fathers is the agenda. Although she eventually gets 50% parenting time, he retains primary custody and she is threatened with loss of that if she objects.

This case is a perfect example of the oppression women face in family courts—which is what our Discrimination against Women in Family Court lawsuit claims [see below].

[We left off last session with Mama 32, so we begin today with Mama 33.]

MEMOS FROM MAMAS

MAMA 33

I went through a custody case that started with my infant being emergency removed from me based on an allegation that I was a danger to myself and my baby. There was no substantiated evidence presented to support that claim, and at that point, even paternity had not been legally established.

My daughter was taken, and for two weeks I did not know where she was or who she was with. I was postpartum, trying to process what was happening, while also being treated as if I was a threat instead of a mother.

When we finally got into court, I was met with a system that felt predetermined. I was told, directly, that this was “not a mother state.” Custody was awarded to her father, and I was placed on supervised visitation, with no clear path to regain normal parenting time.

A Guardian ad Litem was assigned but never filed a formal report. He expressed concerns about the father’s home environment and stated he had multiple questions about him, but no action was taken. There were also personal connections between parties involved that raised concerns for me about impartiality.

As the case continued, it became less about truth and more about endurance. I was told I had grounds to take the case to trial, but that it could take years and cost an amount of money that wasn’t realistic for me to sustain. At the same time, I was warned that going to trial carried the risk of losing my daughter entirely.

So like many mothers in these situations, I was forced into a position where “choice” didn’t feel like a choice at all. In mediation, under pressure and with limited options, I agreed to a 50/50 arrangement with her father designated as primary—not because it reflected what I believed was best, but because it was the safest outcome available to ensure I could remain in my child’s life.

This experience showed me how quickly a mother can be separated from her child based on unproven claims, and how difficult it is to correct the course once that process begins. It also showed me how systems that are meant to protect children can, at times, overlook critical concerns while placing overwhelming weight on others.

I share this because there are other women living this reality—where you are navigating postpartum, grief, fear, and a legal system all at once and being asked to prove your worth as a mother in ways that feel impossible. I’ve been legally silenced and can be in contempt of court if I post my story. This is a broken system.

I haven’t seen my kids since my ex took my daughter while I was giving birth to my other daughter.

I had not seen my son since November of 2015 and my daughter since September 2016.

He had also sexually abused my daughter. She told a doctor but the judge did nothing.

I don’t know what I can do.

MAMA 35

I am about to be jailed for contempt after custody was flipped to my ex at a hearing that happened when I was in the hospital with pneumonia.

I had prevailed for 2 1/2 years before that.

I proved the abuse in 2023 and still have a DVPO [domestic violence protective order], yet the judge granted him SOLE custody with NO parenting time for me.

Family court is a nightmare. All of my “wins” were used against me.

MAMA 36

My son was kidnapped by agency officials and given to the father after being given to the father’s mother.

There are police reports that state the father has threatened to shoot my baby in the face. He is two years old.

Among other horrible treatments, apparently he’s being put into a room for thirty minutes after fighting with his four year old brother, so that he is isolated.

This is a fucking nightmare!

MAMA 37

I just read your write up on Meagan’s story. It is so eerily similar to mine.

I get supervised visitation with my kids twice per year. He has had them for almost four years now.

It started off as temporary “emergency” custody, then became permanent after the GAL wrote a false and scathing commentary on me, the next day after looking me in the eyes, sitting on my couch in my home and telling me that she would be returning them to my custody. My kids told me that their father admitted to bribing her to lie.

They are continually telling me about the abuses they suffer at the hands of their dad and his mom. And I’m helpless to help them.

I’m still fighting, but was just fired by the newest attorney because I ran out of funds to pay her.

I cry myself to sleep over the situation frequently.

The family courts are so corrupt.

MAMA 38

I too have been threatened if I file for child support than my son’s father will retaliate and go for 50/50. He has threatened to bankrupt my parents.

Even with our shared parenting time I have received text messages complaining how he has no time for himself and just wants to be “kid free.” The only time he brings up 50/50 is when the topic of child support is brought back to the table.

I am unable to file for custody because I would rather struggle than risk losing more time with my child.

He does not come to any doctors appointments, earl interventions, dentist appointments, school interviews. I take care of everything.

Now he has a new girl friend and I fear that this exact situation with Meghan will happen to me.

Woman get no credit for devoting their life to their kids, and that means rearranging their life to fit their kids needs and schedule. At what point can those actions be recognized and not look at what is expected?

My son was taken and I was placed under arrest for child abuse. I did not hurt my son.

My son now is living with his dad who was my abuser.

After raising my daughter for 5 years I lost custody to her dad after I returned from a deployment.

MAMA 40

I am in a custody battle with my abusive ex and our 5 children.

I have an extremely biased and corrupt judge who makes her rulings based off her opinion not facts or laws.

I just found your page and am hopeful to find valuable information to help me in my case to protect my kids and get the best outcome. I also want to help advocate for children and women battling the family court system.

I'm on my 4th attorney and cannot find anyone to fight for me and my kids. I'm told to comply to look favorable to the judge and just hand the kids over to my ex whenever he wants them.

WOMEN’S COALITION POSITION STATEMENT

Following is The Women’s Coalition Position Statement. It forms the basis for the lawsuit and our activism in general. It will hopefully aid women in understanding why we need to unite under a shared set of facts and goals if we are going to end the Crisis.

The Women’s Coalition is a grass roots, nonprofit organization with a singular mission: uniting women to end the Custody Crisis—the pandemic of mothers unjustly losing custody and being unable to protect their children after divorce.

Women will only be able to stop the taking and endangering of their children after divorce if they fight together to eliminate the root cause. The reason there has been no progress in the last half century (after divorce became common) is women are divided and attacking symptoms, rather than the cause.

The core cause is identified by looking at the common denominator of Custody Crisis cases around the world over history. While there are many types of corruption and judicial malfeasance in each mother’s case, the one thing they all have in common is the entitling and empowering men and oppressing and disempowering of women, i.e. disparate treatment of the sexes = gender discrimination. This unjust process results in unfair custody determinations that are not in the best interests of the child.

Women are discredited via false findings of being mentally ill, lying, alienating, and a whole host of other untruths, while their primary-nurturing of the children is dismissed. On the other hand, men’s false allegations of abuse or unfitness against the mother are credited, and their abuse, neglect, poor parenting, or unfitness is dismissed.

These false findings are used as the basis for depriving the mother of the custody and parenting time she deserves, and which are in her child(ren)’s best interests. Mothers are often unjustly restricted to supervised visits or no contact and deliberately alienated from their children to punish and silence them.

Hence, women, as a class, are not afforded an “impartial arbiter” (judge) or process. Legally, this means women’s rights to equal protection and due process are being violated because they are women.

Every day in family courts, women are losing what is most precious to them—their children. Worse, it is damaging their children, often tremendously and irreparably.

It’s time for women to stand together and say ENOUGH! The taking and harming of our children must stop NOW!

The last post left off with Mama 24, so we begin today with Mama 25.

MAMA 25

I haven’t seen my 3 children in 5 years.

I pay child support to 2 men. One of them is married to a family law attorney and she recently adopted my daughter without my consent or knowledge.

I feel this was all premeditated because the attorney was in the picture from the beginning 5 years ago. She knew exactly what she was doing.

It’s caused me to have PTSD all these years and I fear that coming forward would put me in danger.

MAMA 26

I’ve been going through a custody battle with my ex for over 2 years. I finally left because of his narcissism, cheating, lying, etc. He knew the only way to hurt me was through the kids.

I did everything and he was an absent parent.

My kids don’t want to be with him but have been brainwashed by him, his girlfriend and the professionals. They have turned everything around as if I was the bad guy. My youngest doesn’t even know who I am.

One of my kids opened up about how he was made to say bad things about me and how the therapist made him think things that weren’t true, including about his dad and his girlfriend.

They all want to be with me but are afraid to say anything because they have been threatened.

We had a psych eval done and his came back with narcissistic behaviors/personality disorder and mine came back with anxiety and depression...I wonder why...try having your kids taken away...

MAMA 27

I have a narcissist ex who has been sexually abusing our daughter since she was three. She’s now six and has been in his custody for the last two years. He colluded with the school and had them lie to the cops and say that I abused my child.

I went to jail not once, but twice. The second time I went to jail was after reporting that my daughter told me her father was touching her private parts and stuck his dick in her mouth.

I told my therapist that her abuse was court ordered. She made a report of child abuse to DCF. I was arrested and charged with making a false report of child abuse.

All of the charges against me have been dropped but my babies are still stuck with the abuser.

MAMA 28

Family court forced me to hand our children to my ex who has convictions for felony child abuse, felony trafficking of heroin, felony manufacturing of methamphetamines, and domestic violence.

My attorney is experiencing retaliation for stating his abuse is not in the best interests of the children. The conduct of the judge to my attorney was absolutely frightening. She was threatened with contempt and jail many times. She was also scolded after giving testimony about my case at a state Child Custody Task Force hearing.

The judge is not allowing people to listen in on my custody hearings.

MAMA 29

I have had 2 DVROs [domestic violence restraining orders] against my ex.

Now they are forcing reconciliation between my child and the abusive father.

He recently committed DV against his current partner.

I’m scared that he might kill me.

MAMA 30

My ex is a judge so I requested the case be moved to another county. That was denied.

It was an almost two year battle where I lost my son and got no visitation with him—but not my daughter. How would I alienate one child and not the other? The lies…

My son has been through so much. It’s so traumatic for him to be ripped out of my home.

Custody is currently 50/50, but my son is miserable.

When will our kids be looked at as humans not property. I pray every day my kids will be ok. Thank you for all you do to fight for our kids.

I am going through a nasty custody battle with an abusive ex. He abused me when we were together and I finally gained the strength to break free.

However, he has now turned to the system to further abuse me. He continues to file custody modification petitions and terrorize me as well as trying to destabilize me.

And the court allows him to do so.

I’m a victim of domestic violence while my ex continues to be awarded with custody while keeping my children away from me.

I’m afraid for their lives.

We need a new system now!!!

NOTE: Many victims of the Custody Crisis talk about how their ex is a narcissist. Most abusers are narcissistic and most custody cases involve abusers, but the problem is not that judges do not recognize narcissism and need to be educated. The problem is that judges will give custody to fathers regardless of whether they are narcissists or abusers or not.

SIS & LAWSUIT

There will be no Sisters in Solidarity forum this month as we are preparing to file our New York Discrimination against Women in Family Court lawsuit. Due to some logistical hurdles, the case is now scheduled to be filed mid-May.

The press conference will not be in front of the SDNY as planned. A lot of women want to attend and speak and in order to accommodate everyone, we’ll be doing it at a hotel event space and we will have a Women’s Coalition get-together after the presser!

MAMA 17

I’m a single MaMa trapped in a corrupt family court situation. My 16 yr.-old son is basically being held hostage by my ex-husband and the court who denied my son a voice even at 16.

My son desperately wants, needs, and deserves his life back. He wants to come home to live with me full-time.

Custody was unjustly flipped from me to my ex when my son was 10 years old. Now my ex has managed to keep my son completely from me. He was granted sole discretion of any contact/communication between my son and me.

My son’s and my rights have been attacked and violated ongoing in this case including our medical, Spiritual, and educational freedoms. We’ve been through a hellish battle for 11+ years with my ex-husband.

My son needs his voice and freedom before it ruins his life and does any more damage, whatsoever.

My 3 children were taken from me one day when they went to school. They never came back.

Their dad had previously been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for stabbing me in the forehead.

It’s been 10 years and he still has my girls.

I am a mother of a 5 & 6 year old. I left their dad over three years ago which exposed me to the truth and the horror of the family courts and how deep it goes and worldwide!!! I’m in New Zealand.

I continue to survive the post-separation abuse of which the most painful part is being forced to watch my children be destroyed.

I’m conflicted over whether to join the fight or save my energy, or what’s left of it, to continue to survive. Can’t not do something, for any child that I can help prevent having the same fate…

I have so many personal abuse stories where the system failed me and my kids.

Still fighting for protection of my kids from their father who went to prison for sexual assault of his own child but I still cant get a protective order for my other children.

I guess he has to rape them all first.

I lost my son for 6 years while I was a teacher. I was put on supervised visitation for 28 months.

I finally got my son back 2 years ago. I will never forget what the judge said—that I was harmful to my son, but I was not, I was a teacher.

His dad abused him and I had pictures and documentation and they did nothing. My son still has to visit with his dad.

My son still sleeps with me at the age of 13 because he wants to know where I am since he was gone from me for 6 years.

His dad is a narcissist.

MAMA 22

I’m a protective mom who fled with my three month old son following a strangulation and beating. I first called 911 but they did not help me, they made no arrest, they even “lost” the body cam footage and police report...hence me having to run for my life.

After a year we were found, I went to jail, and didn’t see my baby for 104 days. I had full custody when I fled, the arrest was unlawful and now I’m suing the county.

All of that and my son’s dad still has custody while I have “visitation”... and I am still scared he’s going to kill me.

We need a real court room with a jury. I will fight everyday for that so other moms and babies don’t have to live in fear or not live at all.

I’m dealing with a case of mental and emotional abuse from my ex husband toward myself and our two daughters. The judge has refused to even listen to my argument.

I’ve spent thousands trying to gain more than 50% custody because my daughters hate being at his house every other week. To no avail, the judge won’t hear a word of it.

I’d love to be a part of something that may change the way the system operates. A judge should never have the power to tell someone how they must operate their own lives because of custody.

I’m completely restricted as the mother of my own children.

MAMA 24

I am currently in the same situation as Charity was, treated like the problem when he was the abuser and I had all of the evidence to back it up—videos, photos, police reports, CPS reports.

He had nothing except his words against me trying to say I have a drinking problem, when I’ve never had any mishaps with the law, lost jobs or anything at all involving alcohol.

He couldn’t even find a witness to lie for him. But the judge still ordered alcohol monitors on both of us, but no orders specific to his abuse! And the Judge is leaning towards 50/50 from what my attorney tells me.

The system is certainly screwed up.

NOTE: Although most cases in which women speak out involve overtly abusive exes, keep in mind that judges grant custody to men even if they just want to get out of child support, maintain control, etc. The core issue is not abuse but power: the systemic empowering of men over children after divorce and its disempowering of women. CHAPTER 12 IS OUT!

Chapter 12 of Pretended Justice: How Far Will They Go to Protect the Lie? is out this week. It is the sequel to Everything Is Going to Be Okay, a heart-wrenching story about a mother who finds herself in Family Court fighting desperately to protect her children from her ex-husband, who is sexually abusing her young sons. The novels are based on the author’s own experience.

In the last chapter, Mandy is horrified that it has been over two years since her boys were taken from her and sixteen months since she has seen them. She decides to start a campaign to raise awareness with the public about the wrongful taking and endangering of children from mothers in family courts.

Mandy is surprised when police come to her house and arrest her for conspiring with the private investigator who surveilled Damian and filmed him sexually abusing Daniel through a window. He has been charged with stalking, and that is now extended to Mandy. This arrest comes despite zero corroborating evidence and Mandy insisting she has never even spoken with him. It is obviously a set-up so the Family Court judge can use it as another pretext for denying Mandy visitation.

And that is exactly what happens; but that is not the only bogus claim the judge uses in her findings from the evidentiary hearing on Mandy resuming visitation. The judge also finds Mandy was involved with Kevin in the arson of Damian’s place, despite no evidence of that. She opines that Mandy thought the fire would lead to the boys being taken away from Damian (a play on the usual pretext that mothers falsely accuse fathers of abuse supposedly to get an advantage in custody).

She also finds that Mandy is an emotional danger to her children because she still believes they were sexually abused and “persists with her irrational convictions”. Mandy is allowed only supervised text message exchanges three times a year and cannot resume face-to-face visits until and unless she says she was wrong, i.e. exonerates Damian. This coercive measure, using contact with children as leverage, is commonly used to silence women about a father’s abuse.

The boys are ordered into therapy “to help them understand their circumstances”. This is code for: “to brainwash and coerce them into recanting the sexual abuse and being silent about any further abuse”.

Meanwhile, Mandy’s mother and brother-in-law go on trial for aiding Mandy in hiding. The criminal court judge uses the universal trick of not allowing the jury to see or hear about the evidence of the sexual abuse from which Mandy was running to protect her children. So they were found guilty. A clear message to anyone foolish enough to consider interfering with a man’s prerogative to sexually abuse his own children.

Mandy is suffering greatly after these events, left with little hope of ever seeing her boys in any sort of normal way…

Since our investigative stories will now be every other week, Memos from Mamas will fill in on some alternative Sundays.

Consciousness Raising groups in the ’60’s and ’70’s were a way for women to learn from each other’s life experiences and apply a political lens, with the goal of ending the oppression to which they were subjected under the Patriarchy.

The main idea was encapsulated in the saying: The personal is political. Women understood that the problems they were facing personally were actually being caused by systemic sexism and, therefore, it was not enough to just tell their stories. They must use them to make social and political change.

We are reviving the spirit of the Consciousness Raising groups and doing it with a specific form of systemic sexism: the entitling and empowering of men to take children from mothers after divorce or separation via Family Court. Messages from victims of the Custody Crisis will be shared here anonymously with our followers to simulate a gathering of minds and hearts of mamas who’ve lost custody.

These messages have been sent mostly through our website contact form or directly to info@womenscoalition.org. We don’t use mothers’ names to protect their privacy. Instead, we use numbers, so if you want to comment about a particular mother’s message, you can refer to it by number. If you recognize your message, feel free to say so. The last Conscious Raising meeting left off with Mama 8, so we’ll begin today with Mama 9.

MEMOS FROM MAMAS

MAMA 9

I was harassed by my son’s father for 13 years through family court here in Alabama. Stalked, bullied on social media for 3 yrs, I lost jobs, etc.

In 2022 lost my 50/50 when I went to ask for full custody due to abuse. I have documented (witnesses & film) of my son’s abuse and a police report of attempted choking of my son.

I was fined $8000 for a “pattern” of complaining. Opposing counsel said I alienated him. I now see him for 48 hours every other weekend.

My son is in danger.

MAMA 10

I haven’t had any contact with my children since Thanksgiving of 2021. My ex-husband won’t allow anyone in my family to have contact with them.

I left a man because of domestic violence in 2016. Six months later, our seven-year-old was sexually abused in his care. I fought for years. Both kids started showing signs of physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Sadly, every time I fought, more and more was taken from me. The judge believes I have mental illnesses and I lied and I made my kids lie.

I’ve been in therapy for years. I didn’t lie, I don’t have any mental illnesses per my therapist. I passed a lie detector test.

I started being accused of sexual abuse. I passed a psychosexual exam. I had multiple psych exams. I took eight parenting classes, and 52 hours of anger management. I got a job. I worked really hard.

My ex moved out of state. I flew back-and-forth 30 times in 2 1/2 years. Then they ordered $23,000 a year in child support and I had to give up visitation.

I never sexually abused my kids, I never lied and I never told them to lie. I left a man who was a pathological liar and it still is. I spent $200,000. My family spent that.

Now I live in the same state as our children and I still don’t have contact. I don’t know what to do. I miss them so much. They’re 12 and 16.

MAMA 11

My ex is a lawyer who has used the judicial system to abuse me and alienate me from my son and my triplet daughters who have been abused by him. Yet the judge is forcing contact.

My daughters refuse to go so there are more contempt filings by my ex. I’m Terrified. The judge has already jailed me once.

Court players always say I’m coaching my daughters, when they are 15 years old and have testified about their abuser!

MAMA 12

I had full custody in Minnesota after 2 back-to-back trials in 1997. The father had a 40 year Judicially Documented history of violence, anger issues, and sexual issues. The judge put many restrictions on his visits with measures in place for the safety of my daughter.

The wealthy (worth $2,700,000) violent father follows me to Illinois. The Illinois judge rendered a third court order noting the many restrictions put in place by the Minnesota judge and an additional Order of Protection.

The father moves to Lake County, IL and sues for custody, now 4 times in less than 2 years. On 9-11-01, I sent my biological child to St. Mary’s Catholic School along with 3 long term foster children (yes I was a licensed foster parent so the state gives me a license to parent), but my biological daughter never came home.

A psych evaluation stated my daughter suffered from PAS [parental alienation syndrome].

My daughter was taken 500 miles away, 60 miles Northeast of Duluth, and for 14 years she was isolated, with no formal education, and sexually abused.

I have everything documented. The Illinois courts facilitated in having a child be sexually abused, by court order, when her father had a history of such.

Family Court gave my abuser sole custody. I lost all rights, face 15 criminal charges and can only have supervised contact with my daughter.

I was never arrested, yet my name was destroyed. The GAL interfered with my job and ignored all evidence.

My daughter is being used as a weapon. This is legal abuse.

MAMA 14

I had to stop fighting for custody because he was taking it out on the children. I haven’t gotten to see my middle son in person since 2018!

I’ve never done drugs, never been abusive (he was), never drank, etc. The entire time nobody could tell me why I couldn’t see my son.

Just over a week ago he finally turned 18 and reached out to me. I can’t wait to see him again. Unfortunately, he still lives with his dad until he graduates so I’ll have to wait until he leaves for college. I’m counting the days!

I was never lucky enough to have supervised or unsupervised visits! I got somewhat occasional video visits the last two years...no more than once a month but usually a few months apart.

I have been battling through family court for the past five years, and through that experience I have come to see how deeply broken and harmful the system can be for mothers and children.

What I believed was an isolated struggle has revealed itself to be a widespread systemic issue. I would love to connect with your organization, share my story, and learn how I can support efforts for reform and awareness.

I’m five years into a custody battle that cost me 18 months with my eldest son and daily life with all three of my children (17, 15, 12).

I know systemic exclusion, dismissed evidence, and celebrating crumbs while fighting for the whole meal.

I’m still in the trenches. The alienation continues, but so does my fight.

I’m one of you.

THROUGHLINE

Keep in mind that these personal Messages from Mamas all have the same political throughline: these women are all victims of the systemic sexism being played out in family courts around the country and world.

THE WHAT, HOW, & WHY OF THE CUSTODY CRISIS:

WHAT: The epidemic of mothers unjustly losing custody and visitation with their children.

HOW: Judges lie about women being liars, alienators, mentally ill, emotionally abusive, etc.; disregard abuse, neglect, and unfitness by men; and do not rule in the best interests of the children.

WHY: There is an Old Boy agenda to maintain men’s power over women and children after divorce.

THE SOLUTION: The only way to stop the taking of our children is to implement a new system where custody cases are heard in a regular civil court. A jury acts as the fact-finder and the judge has no more power than a regular judge, i.e. virtually no discretionary power. [For more info on the Solution, see the Child Custody Act.]

This is the final call for women in New York to become Plaintiffs in our Discrimination against Women in Family Court lawsuit. We are planning to file next month and are gathering the necessary information from mothers.

CHAPTER 10 IS OUT!

In the last chapter [Chapter 9], Mandy’s visits with her boys are only through supervised video messages. Her refuge is working out at the gym, where she feels a sense of control.

She is shocked to hear that Kevin, the man she met in a Facebook group and has dated a few times, is being charged with burning down Damian’s girlfriend’s home, where they are all living, while they were out of town. Mandy is suspected of having conspired with him and that is used to stop all contact with her boys.

The social worker tells the police that Mandy is delusional and has drugged the boys and falsely accused Damian of sexual abuse. Mandy tells her off and asks why she is lying. Wanda has no response.

Summer turns to fall which turns to winter. Mandy does her best to hold it together, sure she will get her boys back after the fact-finding in Kevin’s case.

But a surprise happens in January! A Private Investigator has submitted a witness statement testifying that he has been surveilling Damian since he saw Mandy in the news for having “kidnapped” her boys.

He testified that he saw Damian sexually abusing a boy who seemed drugged through a window and he got it in on video. He had outed the judge on social media for covering up the abuse, so now the judge has to recuse for conflict of interest. Mandy is thrilled!

Things seem to be looking up for Mandy…

In the late 1960’s, women began getting together in small groups to talk about their lived experiences under The Patriarchy. Women would take turns speaking about how they were being negatively impacted and oppressed in a multitude of ways. The others would listen without interrupting, judging, or debating.

These bygone meet-ups were referred to as Consciousness Raising. Women learned from each other’s life experiences and applied a political lens to them, with the goal of making change and ending the oppression they were experiencing. The main idea was encapsulated in the saying: The personal is political. Women understood that the problems they were facing personally were actually being caused by systemic sexism.

These grass-roots activists provided the foundation for the Women’s Liberation movement, which firmly established women’s equality with men as citizens and human beings. This was an amazing turn of events after 12,000 years of Patriarchal dominance and subjugation. We owe these unsung heroes for being the driving force behind this sea change in culture, politics, and law.

LINGERING IRONY

But there is a lingering irony: Patriarchy literally means rule of the father, and the one arena in which women have not achieved equality or power is with children of the father. Women continue to be discriminated against in family courts, resulting in their children being unjustly taken from them.

Men were no fools. When women became liberated, they knew the one way to continue the age-old power and control over “their” women was via children. They were not about to let this potent power slip away.

So, they rigged systems to ensure they could take custody of children, and Family Court became the main staging grounds. The threat of taking children remained viable and potent, serving to keep women in bad marriages and punish them if they left. The power to take custody of children is Patriarchy’s last and most brutal prerogative and weapon.

Yet, most women are unaware of this persisting form of Patriarchy and enter Family Court like lambs to the slaughter. They believe equality has already been achieved and they will be afforded a fair and impartial process. They soon discover, to their shock and horror, that they have virtually zero power to maintain custody if men want it.

GENDER ISSUE

So, while men have always known the battle for custody of children is a gender issue, women have been slow to the punch. They have been wrongly led to believe—by both fathers’ and mothers’ groups—that the Custody Crisis is not about gender. This confusion divides women and prevents them from uniting to end the Crisis.

Hopefully, by listening to Mamas’ Memos in our virtual Consciousness Raising sessions, women will come to understand that the loss of their children is not just personal, but political. It is a result of systemic sexism, just as the early pioneers discovered the other forms of oppression were.

And so there is one last, major battle against the Patriarchal order: for the power to maintain custody and ensure our children’s well-being and safety after divorce. To be successful, we need to unite as women, as a class, as more than half the population, to take back the power that has always been rightfully ours.

MAMA 1

I was personally traumatized by the Sheffield family courts, with long-term damage to myself and my children. I am waiting on specialist trauma therapy to try and come to terms with it all. I would love to help the cause in any way I can.

It has been six years since the nightmare of court ended. I live with the fallout, humiliation, heartbreak, and devastation daily. It was so complex and corrupt what was done it is hard for me to explain to people.

I'm so afraid my young daughter will grow up believing the narrative her father will tell her. I told my solicitors, and the local authority to the Ombudsmen. Even though faults were found I still believe those in power were protected. The system protects itself.

In the end I was so burned out representing myself in two cases against two abusive fathers I stopped trying to get to the truth. Proving what was done to us. A court usher stopped me in public one day some time after and asked if I was ok. Explained who she was. Apologised for what I went through. That my case will stay with her forever. As much as it was validating to some extent it upset me that no one spoke up.

I would joke at the time of court I could hear the jangle of the asylum keys. I'd already experienced the family court prior to these proceedings so knew how things should be. I questioned and challenged decisions, and for that I was punished. As were my children.

I still have boxes of documents that I want to revisit. I need to make sense of the madness of it all. I have not felt able before now. Maybe now is the time to help the cause. And help myself to heal the trauma of it all. It's hard when my children, two as young adults now are so badly emotionally impacted by what happened to us. My young daughter at nine living with the fallout of a life made much more difficult than it ever needed to be.

I think this [organization] is amazing because I too lost kids and became suicidal for 3 years. I’ve overcome it for about a year until about 3 months ago when my divorce was finally final and he got custody of my kids.

I don’t get to wake up with them. I go in their bedrooms when I go visit just to go through their things to get to know them and know what they like and who they are becoming as they get older.

It’s a complete void everyday that will never go away not having them. I wanna hangout and go places and do things and just know who they are as individuals. I know them but I wanna know them like I should. I should know everything about them yet I’m limited.

It kills me EVERYDAY TO BE AWAY FROM THEM. NO IT NEVER GETS EASIER U JUST COPE THE BEST YOU CAN AND ITS NOT ALWAYS A COPING MOMENT OR DAY. SOME DAYS ARE HARDER THAN OTHERS. I JUST MISS THEM SO MUCH I CRAVE THEM TO TOUCH AND LOVE ON THEM AND HUG THEM. TO ASK THEIR PLANS FOR THE DAY OR HOW THEIR DAY WENT. THANKS FOR LETTING MOMS WITHOUT THEIR CHILDREN BE HEARD.

I have an abusive ex-husband who sexually assaulted a 10th grader.

He was given custody of my children because of our messed up judicial system.

I'm out of money and don't know what to do.

MAMA 4

I am a registered nurse and proactive, protective mother who survived severe coercive control, sexual violence, and physical assault by my former partner. I was raped and dragged down a flight of stairs on Christmas of 2024, and in the immediate aftermath I transported myself to my place of work to undergo a forensic rape examination, believing that following every medical and legal protocol would ensure protection for myself and my children.

Despite documented evidence and full compliance with recommended steps, I have been repeatedly met with resistance, minimization, and systemic obstruction. I have witnessed firsthand how coercive control does not end with separation, and how power imbalances and external legal relationships can continue to endanger survivors through the systems meant to protect them.

I am seeking to join the Women’s Coalition to connect with other women who understand post-separation abuse, institutional failure, and the long-term impact of coercive control. I bring lived experience, professional insight, and a commitment to advocacy, accountability, and reform so survivors are believed, protected, and not retraumatized.

My son was taken away by family court without due process and under hearsay. He was 13 at the time. He’s been gone for 2 years.

My life has gone downhill and I’m now homeless, without a job, and bankrupt. All because my child that I loved and was a great mom to was allowed to be manipulated by his father and step mom.

The system allowed him to just not come home. We followed a parenting plan for 13 years and I was the custodial parent. That was taken away in 15 minutes. I also didn’t have an attorney at the time and wanted one. I asked them to continue the hearing and they ignored my request and ruined my life and family.

I’ve been in a custody battle for 5 years without a trial date. All temporary orders punish me and not him.

The judge has blatantly ignored crucial evidence. Had a bunch of in chambers hearings and then would “forget” what he ordered.

So by year 2-3 years of this, I started requesting everything on record. I got punished even more. The first psychologist that was court ordered was as corrupt as they come.

6 years of post separation abuse enforced by the family courts and judge saying "it’s become fashionable to call disagreements between spouses, domestic abuse"

Drained of finances, lost my family home and now lost custody of my 7 year old son after Cafcass ignored the psychologist experts’ advice that I pose no risk to my sons....yes I have full time care of my 7 year old’s half baby brother.

Human rights breached, constantly fighting for justice. Isolated from friends and family, have now multiple debilitating auto-immune diseases and have lost my job as a registered nurse of 20 years. Driven me to near suicide.

Life is continued torture since I fled abuse on 6/5/2020 and my ex-husband applied for full custody of our then 1 year old son. Most days I wish I never woke up.

But I want family court abuse and cafcass workers to be held accountable and it not be another woman in the media that has taken her life. This is trauma, and ongoing psychological abuse.

CHAPTER 8 IS OUT!

Pretended Justice: How Far Will They Go to Protect the Lie? is the sequel to Everything Is Going to Be Okay, a heart-wrenching story about a mother who finds herself in Family Court fighting desperately to protect her children from her ex-husband, who is sexually abusing her young sons. The novels are based on the author’s own experience.

She thought nothing could hurt more than losing her boys until she tried to get them back…Faced with the devastating findings of Family Court, Amanda picks herself up and keeps on fighting for her sons. Through family court and criminal court, she navigates a complex maze of professional people and settings in pursuit of a justice that eludes her at every turn. A pretended justice.

In Chapter 7, Mandy anxiously awaits her next visit with her boys after the wonderful Facetime call, but the social worker is not returning her messages. She makes another application to the court for her visits to resume, but in the meantime there’s been a fire at Damian’s girlfriend’s house, where he has just moved to with the boys. The local authority and the court treat her as a suspect in the arson and use it as a pretext to keep her from having visits with the boys.

Meanwhile, Mandy’s mother has been criminally charged with perjury for having told police she did not know where Mandy went with the boys for the mere three weeks she was in hiding. Mandy thinks she should plead guilty to avoid the possibility of prison time, but her mother decides to risk it and plead not guilty to support Mandy and for the sake of getting the truth out: the boys’ disclosures of sexual abuse and trafficking by their father were true and they would be in danger visiting their father.

Mandy continues to be active on social media with sympathetic Family Court survivors and activists. A man named Kevin gives her some much-needed attention and distraction from the pain of missing her boys, so she begins going out with him. But something feels off...
