Sharon Stone Reveals Why She Lost Custody—But It's Not What She Thinks
Ask to Help Raise Awareness about the Real Reason Mothers Are Losing Custody
Sharon Stone revealed for the first time Tuesday on iHeart’s Table for Two podcast why she lost custody of her young son—or, rather, why she believes she lost custody.
What she doesn’t realize is that the judge’s stated reasoning for his ruling was just a pretext. He would have inevitably given custody of Little Roan to the father anyway, as so many mothers know, having lived through their own version of the Custody Crisis.
TOO SEXY—NOT
Sharon’s case is unusual in that she was not found to be lying, alienating or mentally ill. Just too sexy. Actually, having acted too sexy.
The judge asked my child—my tiny, little, tiny boy, "Do you know your mother makes sex movies?"
The movie the judge was referring to, Basic Instinct, had come out 12 years before the custody battle even began. Stone became famous for this role, in which she plays a sociopathic, bisexual woman who is a murder suspect.
Her character seduces the detective assigned to the case, played by another iconic actor, Michael Douglas. She won the Golden Globe Best Actress award for this role.
Sharon expresses astonishment to the Table for Two podcast host that her portrayal of a sexy character could be used to deprive her of custody. Her bewilderment is befitting such a ludicrous ruling.
To think that a judge would take custody away from a loving mother due to an acting role that has no bearing on parenting is incomprehensible. Shades of the old witch trials.
But what many Coalition moms know is that is not really why Sharon lost custody. Sure, the misogynistic judge may have disapproved of her acting, but it’s crucial to not be fooled and misdirected by superficial judicial machinations.
Being too sexual was just a handy pretext.
Eyes must be kept on the ball if we are going to end the crisis: Even if Stone had not taken that role in Basic Instinct, the judge would have used something, anything else. And he likely did use other things to shore up his ruling. Judges just need a cover story, regardless of how lame or untrue, to justify switching custody to the father.
And they have the power to deem women anything they want, even being too sexy. And there is nothing women can do about it.
Sharon’s case supports the Coalition’s position that the Custody Crisis is not essentially about abuse. She did not claim her ex was abusive to her son or her. In fact, there are plenty of women who’ve lost custody who did not report any abuse by their ex.
Her case also supports that judges should not have the power to decide custody. If there is any one case for judges not deciding custody, hers is it.
A LITERAL BROKEN HEART
As every mom knows, it is the cruelest form of torture to be deprived of your child. Not to mention the trauma a child experiences being deprived of his mother. Sharon was restricted to just one brief visit a month with Roan.
Sharon admitted after she lost custody she wasn’t able to function. She was so depressed she would cry a lot and sleep every afternoon, unable to get up.
I couldn’t focus on anything but having my son back in my arms. Nothing else mattered, just getting him back.
She was treated for heart problems at the Mayo Clinic. The trauma had caused irregularities in the upper and lower chambers of her heart.
It broke my heart. It literally broke my heart.
Although it is not clear how much damage was done initially by their separation or how long the separation lasted, it appears Sharon and Roan have a great relationship now. Thankfully, he was not alienated from her, like happens in so many Custody Crisis cases.
WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT
The take away here is that Sharon would have lost custody anyway, whether she had played a too-sexy role or not. The truth is, the system is rigged so women do not have the power to maintain custody. So, women like Sharon, and millions of others around the world, should not feel it was their fault for having lost custody.
The problem is women do not know the Family Court system is rigged until it is too late. And many do not ever realize the real reason they lost custody. Sharon correctly states she experienced “abuse by the system” but does not appear to realize that abuse was a result of systemic male entitlement and it’s counterpart: systemic discrimination against women.
The Custody Crisis is a Women’s Empowerment, or more accurately, Disempowerment, issue. Women’s lack of power to keep or protect children after divorce is inarguably the most serious, impactful and critical women’s issue of the millennium. Women will not be truly equal or free until they have the power to keep and protect children post-separation.
RAISING AWARENESS WITH SHARON
It is imperative to raise awareness with women about what they will face in Family Court. MSM is all over Sharon’s story, but none have connected her experience to the millions of other mothers who’ve lost custody in family courts around the world.
Sharon is concerned about women’s rights as she stated on Instagram on Wednesday—International Women’s Day:
Sharon says in her post:
Let’s stand together and make this a fair world on an international scale.
So let’s all stand together to demand a fair system in which judges do not have the power to take or endanger our kids.
It is great Sharon is finally able to speak about her own particular horror perpetrated upon her via Family Court. Perhaps she will help bring awareness to the public about the Custody Crisis and the real reason mothers are losing custody.
