I really really wanted to like this and I'm pleased it's getting attention, but I was extremely disappointed in the downplay of the father in this story and completely unrealistic ending. This sends the wrong message in my opinion that abusers can "change" and do what's right for their children when that is not what is happening.

I had many similar thoughts while watching. I was impressed with many aspects of the story. It was the most real portrayal of family court and escaping abuse that I've seen. But there were many flaws. I would add to your assessment that the abuse endured by Alex should have been named as physical violence. Yes, there was emotional abuse too, but punching walls, throwing things, screaming in her face etc, that is all physical, domestic violence.

Finally, I've been waiting for a movie like this.

Little by little, family law loopholes get exposed. It’s too bad that our children are loseing mommies in the mean time. So many mothers suffer the most painful loss a mother could face. However, our children will grow into adults one day, and in that day, things might just turn around enough that they too, will learn the truth of why mom went away, rather than the story they’ve been told. So for that at least, little by little, we will have them back one day, with the truth on our side.

Very disappointing how they portray him but at least raisin awareness. Totally my case too. Our proceedings ended after 3 years because dad decided he couldn't be bothered with court anymore. Judge really tried to persuade him to continue and said he would 'change mums narrative of abuse' - narrative of abuse? Social services and police reports showed dad was hitting and neglecting my child, hitting and neglecting his new partners children and taking drugs around them. Him and new partner were also convicted of firearms and drugs crime. Family court covered it all up kept saying 'no disclosures from the police' - police told me they sent the disclosure to the court twice and gave me a copy!! Family court is rotten to the core.
